The collection comprises the following items: Incomplete typescripts of some chapters of The Tichborne case by F.H. Maugham published in 1936 (folders 1-2) and correspondence concerning the trial: Four letters (1873) from the Tichborne claimant, Arthur Orton (signed Roger Tichborne) to Dr E. Kenealy, the leading Counsellor in the inheritance case; one letter (14 February 1874) ) from the claimant, Arthur Orton (signed Roger Tichborne) to Edward H. Blyth; one letter (27 July 1875) from John Bright to Sir George Duckett regarding the trial (folder 3); the will of Sir Roger Charles Doughty Tichborne, London, 29 May 1869 (1 folio item).

Dr. Kenealy studied law at Dublin and was called to the English Bar in 1847. He was leading council in the Tichborne claim which became the longest case on record. His conduct during and after the trial brought him before a professional tribunal and he was eventually debarred. He was elected as representative for Stoke on 14 Feb. 1875 and took his seat on the 18th. Roger Tichborne (b. 1829), heir to an ancient Hampshire baronetcy, was reported to have drowned off South America in 1854. His mother, refusing to accept his death, placed world-wide advertisements seeking her son. Arthur Orton claimed to be Tichborne, a claim which was disputed in a civil action in 1871-1872 resulting in Orton being charged with perjury and gaoled.
